In the Field: Papermaking

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Saturday–Sunday, September 27 & 28; 10am–4pm CT

This in-person workshop is geared toward thinking sustainably in building a studio practice of papermaking with natural fibers.

Using traditional ideas in a contemporary sense, explore a variety of organic and wildcrafted plant fiber options (including some agricultural byproducts), such as garlic leaf, hay, wheat straw, and more. Process materials by hand as a group while learning about each step of the papermaking process. Instruction will cover the gathering process for dry and freshly cut fiber and the cooking process–including pre-cooking prep, caustic solutions, water concerns, rinsing, efficiency of process, and possible renewable fuel sources. Learn about beating options, pigmenting, sheet forming, and drying. This physical workshop will include cutting fiber by hand, cooking, rinsing, and pulling sheets.

Participants will come away with a solid grounding in materials and techniques for future independent papermaking in MCBA's Papermaking Labs

Wear clothing that can get dirty and shoes that can get wet (i.e. rubber boots, garden clogs, etc.). Participants need to return to pick up their paper on Saturday, 10/4, or later in The Shop at MCBA to allow the wet sheets of paper time to dry while pressed flat for a few days.

Andrea Peterson (she/her or any pronouns) is an artist and educator. She lives and creates work in northwest Indiana at Hook Pottery Paper, a studio and gallery co-owned with her husband.
