Private Workshops
Community organizations, college classes, and corporate teams are invited to schedule private workshops in MCBA’s studios!
Each workshop begins with a brief introduction to MCBA followed by a hands-on activity in letterpress printing or suminagashi marbling. Workshops are two-hours long. Maximum capacity depends on studio size, listed below. Additional participants may be accommodated in a second scheduled workshop.
The cost for each group is $550* + $55 materials fee.
*501c3 organizations are eligible for a 20% discount on workshop tuition (materials fees are not eligible for discounts).
Letterpress Poster Workshop
Learn about the history and power of the printing press as a tool for sharing information, and use a printing press to print a message! First, as a group, decide on a few words or a short phrase of up to 3 words (this could be a protest poster, a quote, etc.). The teaching artist will work with the group to set the phrase with wood type, and each participant will apply ink and print at least one copy of their print to take home.
15 participants, maximum
Suminagashi
Immerse yourself in suminagashi (“floating ink”) paper marbling! This in-person workshop includes the history of paper marbling across cultures—from its origins in 12th-century Japan and China to its development in Turkey to the present day—and detailed demonstrations of basic techniques and patterns. Come away with unique marbled paper that you can use to make cards, books, collage, and more.
