Introduction to Book Design

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 Washington Avenue South Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Thursdays: February 13, 20, 27; 6–9pm CT

This in-person book design workshop is introductory and tailored to the needs of beginning and intermediate book artists.

The focus is on both traditional and experimental typography, layout, and book structure. Each session will provide rigorous overviews of specific techniques as well as opportunities for hands-on application and experimentation. Participants will learn design concepts and solutions which will build their confidence with book design.

The first session is an in-depth introduction to typography and script. During the second session, participants will produce a 32-page pamphlet focusing on book-specific elements such as title pages and colophons, and practice designing across two-page spreads. In the final session, participants will make a small album binding with flexible paper (Kozo or Gampi) album-hinges.  This structure can be used to bind diverse material together—such as watercolor paintings, drawings, prints, or found material—and still open fully.

Each session will begin with a presentation followed by time working with materials related to the session’s topic. Guidance on individual projects or interests will be offered throughout.

Level: Beginner; all skill levels welcome.
Certificate: 9 hours, Category A or D; fulfills Core design/content requirement
