Woodcut Printmaking

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Thursdays: February 20 & 27; 6–9pm

Experience the process of relief printing while carving and printing your own design in this in-person workshop.

Learn all steps of the process, from transferring your design to the printing block to signing your first edition of prints! Instruction will cover methods for turning your design into an image for woodcut printing, carving techniques, techniques for printing with a baren (a smooth pad used to apply pressure when printing) by hand, and how to repeat the carving and printing process to achieve more depth and layers on your prints.

We will be printing with barens for most of this workshop, but the instructor will demonstrate printing a woodcut on a Vandercook press and participants can each pull a print or two. Those with letterpress experience are welcome to return to MCBA to print woodcuts on the Vandercook in Letterpress Labs. For those interested in learning more about letterpress printing, please take Letterpress 1: Printing Basics and subsequent workshops. Letterpress 1–3 are required in order to print independently during Letterpress Labs.

*The materials fee includes all materials for the workshop including a new set of Rockler’s Flexcut Craft Carvers for each participant to use during the workshop and take home with them for continued use.

Level: Beginner; all skill levels welcome.
Certificate:  6 hours, Category A, B, or D

For individuals to whom these scholarships do not apply, register at the Adult rate and, if you are able, consider making a donation when registering to support MCBA’s efforts to make scholarships available.

Please note: Registration closes 2/10 at midnight (CT).
