MCBA/Jerome Book Arts Mentorship Series VIII

The MCBA/Jerome Book Arts Mentorship is an artist development program aimed at introducing book arts to early career artists whose primary medium is in another discipline. . With generous funding from the Jerome Foundation, workshops, and critical support from MCBA, Series VIII Jerome Mentorship recipients D’Angelo Christian, Leah Klister, and Suriya Sam-Khuth spent one year developing skills in contemporary and traditional book arts techniques, and incorporating these into their larger practices. D’Angelo Christian’s photographs contain day to day and acknowledgment of love and gesture contained within family, loved ones, and natural world. To collect and preserve his own personal history and give agency to his own identity is why he photographs.

Suriya Sam-Khuth (she/they) is a Khmer-American collage artist and independent curator from Rochester, Minnesota. Through acts of seeing, tearing, folding, cutting, and piecing together fragments, their practice reflects on the overlaps between the processes of collage and becoming. Suriya holds a BA in Media and Cultural Studies from Macalester College. Upon graduating in 2020, they are grateful to have been awarded grants, fellowships, and residencies from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation, the Southeast Asian Diaspora Project, the Emerging Curators Institute, the Chautauqua School of Art, and Public Functionary’s Studio 400 Incubator Program. They are also the founder and curator of Generation Magazine, a publication that gathers the voices of artists throughout the Cambodian diaspora.
