Movable Metamorphs

  • Minnesota Center for Book Arts 1011 South Washington Avenue #100 Minneapolis, MN, 55415 United States (map)

Thursday, April 17; 6–9pm CT

Join Shawn in MCBA’s studios to build this 5-structure movable book using a pre-cut kit and a simple set of hand tools--all you'll do is fold and glue!

Are you looking for active, visual ways to capture and hold your reader’s attention? Misdirection and surprise are excellent attention-holding narrative tools; pull tabs and wheels are excellent and effective mechanical tools. Combine the two and your reader won't be able to tear themselves away! With just a pull or a turn, your story can be advanced without having to turn a page. With more sophisticated (though still easily executed) applications of these tools, you can entice your reader through short, multi-step animations.

Please bring a cereal or cracker box from the recycling bin. Each person needs two pieces that are 5 1/4 x 7 5/16 and 1/32" thick without creases or folds.

Shawn Sheehy (he/him, Chicago IL) has been teaching book arts courses and workshops on the national level for 20 years, including stops at MCBA, Center for Book Arts (New York), Penland, Arrowmont, FOBA, Pyramid Atlantic, San Francisco Center for the Book, and PBI. He has created two trade pop-up books: Welcome to the Neighborhood (2015) and Beyond the Sixth Extinction (2018). Both were published by Candlewick Press and won numerous awards. He holds a Book Arts MFA from Columbia College Chicago.
