Brick Walk Zine by Dio Cramer
“Brick Walk: An exploration of the dérive, London landscapes, and the psychogeography of old bricks.
I have been photographing brick buildings for years as I wander unplanned through urban spaces.
This particular project unfolded as I walked 130 miles around London in Spring 2024, with supporting dérives in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Chicago, New York, and Oaxaca.
In London, my only plan was to wander and follow the brick buildings. The frameworks of the situationists (the dérive, and psychogeography) emerged as I kept stumbling upon situationist references.
For all these hours of walking I listened to the sounds of the cities, overheard fragments of other people’s lives, talked to some strangers, and made a couple of friends who would occasionally join my walks.
Through these adventures I have found a love for wheatpasted art, cafes by canals and train tracks, staircases that lead nowhere, bricks in cemeteries, wildflowers in alleys, and when yellow brick and red brick touch, especially during golden hour.
‘Your actions are mightier than any architect's intentions’ is a line borrowed from Carmen Maria Machado, In the Dream House, that I have not been able to stop thinking about for many years. All of my adoration to her for that absolutely perfect set of words.” - Dio Cramer
