“(Un)Broken is box form with multiple trays that holds glazed ceramic plates on the top and bottom levels with a star accordion book in between the two layers. Each layer has it’s own tray pulls that allow for a sense of discovery as the box is unpacked. The bifurcated plate on the top appears broken but the glazed edges and custom tray divider signals otherwise. The second layer reveals a star accordion book that magnetically clasps into place. The reflective paper end pages function almost like gym mirrors for the sequence of body builders, each maneuvering weights. The first and last images are both open and vulnerable self-portraits of the artist. The final tray is the weight made whole again and the circular form of the plate unified. (Un)Broken was the first collaborative construction for Selleck and allowed him to create beyond the skill set he is currently developing. Working had in hand with Erin Maurelli (a celebrated book builder, Tamarind trained printmaker and educator) they discussed options and explored various treatments before arriving at the finished form.”
